Covid-19 Cases Are Rising in More Than 40 States

The spread of the coronavirus appeared to be accelerating this week in the U.S. with a key indicator in 44 of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. flashing an “ominous” warning sign Tuesday, a health official said.

The seven-day average of reported cases was higher than the 14-day average in all but six states, the most to record such levels since July, and a sign cases are rising.

LATEST ON THE VIRUS

  • U.S. cases rise by more than 52,000
  • Hospitalizations at highest level since Aug. 29
  • J&J hopes to know within days whether it can resume testing its vaccine

The U.S. trend corresponded with reports of rising cases in Europe. The 27 countries of the European Union plus the U.K. have overtaken the U.S. while still accounting for differences in population size. Together, they recorded an average of 78,000 cases a day over a seven-day period ending on Oct. 12, or 152 cases for every million residents. The U.S. recorded 49,000 a day on average over the same period, about 150 for every million residents.

The increased spread has come earlier than some epidemiologists anticipated—when cooler temperatures in the fall and winter, school re-openings and holidays were likely to bring many indoors.
